Catford is a district in south east London, and in the Borough of Lewisham. The name is said to derive from the place where cattle crossed the river Ravensbourne in Saxon times.
It is also said that the name originates from black cats, associated with witchcraft, being thrown into the river during witch hunts.
A nod to this idea still exists today, the Catford cat is a fibreglass sculpture of a black cat which lives above the entrance to the Catford Centre.
